Becoming a tourism teacher…fast!
So you’ve just been told that you will be teaching tourism in the next few weeks…what do you do? Where do you find key information to get yourself started.
First, check out the provincial tourism curriculum updated a couple of years ago. You can get the learning outcomes and create your own program, or you can follow the provincial curriculum.
Second, have a look at the Secondary Tourism Educators Group website. STEG is an ad hoc group of teachers passionate about teaching tourism and sharing resources. The site is occasionally updated and has some good links to get you started.
Third, check out the BC Centre for Tourism Leadership and Innovation at www.bctli.ca

Hi Nicole…thanks for posting. I am creating space here to re-create a community of shared practice amongst tourism educators. I am also getting in touch with tourism educators privately to encourage them to post their legacies before retiring

hello tourism educators
I have just finished revising Chapter 1 of the 7th edition of the text “Tourism & Travel: Focus Canada” and updating the Instructor’s Manual. The package should be available in January, 2009. Hope you have an excellent teaching year in 2009.

Coleen, I used Passport, by Nelson Canada (David Howell et al – authors) as my class text, but actually found I used a textbook very little, preferring to use a variety of other resources.
Nicole and Coleen, I have taught Tourism 11 and 12 for the past 10+ years and would be willing to share resources, let me know what areas you might need some help with.
Here is website with some good curriculum ideas- http://www.gnb.ca/0000/publications/curric/Hospitalityandtourism110.pdf

Hi, I am interested in teaching tourism to secondary students in BC. I have been in the profession at a management and consulting level for 5 years and also participate in Go2hr’s tourism presentations at high schools. Any help is appreciated. While going back to school for 2-4 years would be fun, I don’t have the money to do so! Is there a way I can apply my tourism/business knowledge to a classroom and obtain a fasttrack teaching certificate to get in the classroom? Thanks for any help!

Well…I am hoping you may find some useful information in these pages on this website. I have intentionally gifted teachers with some of the favourite resources for freed in the resources section where you may download ideas .
The Tourism Career Samplers and tourism survival Kits have proven very useful to many teachers and students over the past 10 years. They are loaded with practical activities

Hi Audry… lovely to hear from you…have you checked out the Cultural Issues in Tourism books at teachingtourism.com? Personally I LOVE them!
I developed them over years of teaching cultural issues in tourism. they are experiential. In my teaching experience I find so many tourism students are kinesthetic learners … they love to learn by doing. so I get them up debating, creating tourism events, that sort of thing. I kept revising them as I led the learning activities…based on how the students responded. I hope you enjoy them and that your students get as much out of them as mine did.
This whole tourism/Olympic thing is sooo interesting…I’ll post a blog post there too…
